About New Zealand’s Health & Safety Act
According to the New Zealand’s Health & Safety Employment Act employers must amongst other things “provide suitable protective clothing and equipment to staff”, this includes safety prescription eyewear. To be compliant with this requirement, it is not enough to simply supply protective side shields and/or plastic lenses. Protective eyewear must comply with the AS/NZS 1337.6:2007 standard.
AS/NZS 1337.6:2007 specifically covers the minimum requirements for prescription eye protection against low and medium impacts from flying particles and fragments in the work place. It does not apply to eye protection in which the prescription lenses are fitted behind the plano (non-prescription) lenses.
